Spring at Borough Farm: Lambing, Blossom and Dartmoor at Its Best
There’s a moment in early spring when you can feel the farm shift. It’s not sudden — it arrives quietly, in the softening of the ground underfoot, the longer light at the end of the day, and the first tentative birdsong at dawn. After months of frost-hardened earth and still, grey mornings, Borough Farm is stretching back to life.
Nestled between Dartmoor and the North Cornish coast, our farm is one of the most peaceful places to experience a Devon spring. Whether you’re staying in one of our beautifully restored barns — The Yard, The Granary, The Shippon or The Dairy — or our Great Links yurt, spring brings a gentle, unhurried magic that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Lambing Season on the Farm
If there’s one thing that defines spring at Borough Farm, it’s lambing season. Our rare breed sheep are out on the pastures with their lambs from late March, and it’s a sight that never gets old — no matter how many springs we’ve watched them. If you’re staying with us over the coming weeks, you’ll almost certainly spot them from your barn window, tottering about on brand new legs.
It’s one of the things our guests love most about a spring farm stay in Devon: waking up to the sound of lambs in the field, coffee in hand, with absolutely nowhere to rush off to.
Apple Blossom in the Orchard
The apple orchard sits at the heart of Borough Farm — its cider apple trees were first planted in 1846, and by late April the orchard is at its most beautiful. The trees are heavy with blossom — pale pink and white against a backdrop of fresh green — and the wildflower patches we sowed last autumn are beginning to show their first shoots along the hedgerows. Primroses scatter the meadow edges, and the whole farm hums with new life.
Our orchard isn’t just for show, either. The apples are harvested each autumn and pressed into Borough Farm apple juice — bottled locally and available for guests to buy during their stay. But more on that another time.

Yoga Retreats and Wellness at Borough Farm
Spring is the perfect season for our wellness programme. Tuesday yoga classes continue in The Loft, our beautifully restored barn space overlooking the farmyard, led by Julia every Tuesday evening at 6pm from September through to June. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or stepping onto the mat for the first time, you’re welcome here.
Our Breathe & Move yoga retreats run through the spring season too, offering a blend of gentle movement, nourishing food, and unhurried days. From Thursday evening pizza gatherings to morning yoga with a view, healthy farm breakfasts, and afternoons spent exploring the coast or moors — each retreat creates space to reconnect with yourself and with nature.
Spring Walks on Dartmoor
Dartmoor in spring is extraordinary. The gorse blazes golden across the hillsides, the rivers run high and clear, and the tors stand sharp against skies that feel endlessly wide. March and April bring wildflowers, skylarks, and newborn foals on the moor — and the walking is at its very best before the summer crowds arrive.
Borough Farm is perfectly placed for exploring Dartmoor on foot. The paths are firm, the air is fresh, and you’ll often have the landscape almost entirely to yourself. The South Devon coast is just a short drive away too, with quiet beaches and dramatic clifftop walks that feel like a world of their own in early spring.
Do keep dogs on a lead during lambing and ground nesting bird season from March through July — it’s all part of respecting the landscape and the animals that call it home.

An Eco-Friendly Farm Stay in Devon
At Borough Farm, sustainability isn’t a buzzword — it’s how we live. We generate electricity from solar panels, collect rainwater for use on the farm, and compost all our food waste. Our approach is simple: tread lightly, source locally, and leave things better than we found them.
Choosing a spring break at Borough Farm means choosing a holiday that’s good for you and good for the land. It’s the kind of slow, considered escape that Devon does so well.
