Coastal Activities

Devon is home to two fabulous coastlines with their own unique beachscapes,  the north coast with its rugged and energetic seas and the calmer gentler cousins to the South. To the North, the coastline around Hartland is particularly wild,  with dramatic coastal paths, the quaint cobbled streets of Clovelly winding their way down to the harbour, being a great place to visit.

In South Devon, a visit to the oyster shack, which serves the best local sea food near Bigbury is a popular choice,  it is particularly good for local crab and lobster, with South Milton sands nearby,  a wonderful stretch of sandy beach with a lovely cafe, namely the beach house and also Watersport hire, this is a great spot for paddle boarding.  If you are looking for a pub with a scenic water front then the ship inn at Noss Mayo is hard to beat and there are also great coastal walking trails from the village.

With Borough Farm’s  proximity to the Tamar Valley, the Tamar forming the boundary line between Devon and Cornwall, there is also the added benefit of the accessibility of the north Cornwall coastline.  Crackington Haven and Widemouth bay being our nearest points of contact, and always firm favourites.  Bude with its wonderful sea pool for an early morning dip and gentle canal running inland for great dog walks is increasingly popular with our guests.

Sandymouth,  a stunning national trust beach is wonderful, with its long sandy beach, rock pools, waterfall and NT cafe, there is much to like.  Likewise Northcott mouth to it’s west is also beautiful and has a wonderful little cafe - the rustic tea garden, just a short walk inland from the beach.

If you want to find yourself on your very own beach, then take the coastal path westwards from Crackington Haven along a most dramatic section of coastline where you will find wild goats and wonderful plant and bird life until a quick shimmy down a rope will take you to Strangles beach,

For a spot of water skiing, head to Rock where you will find the water ski centre. Just across the estuary you will find Padstow, home of Rick Stein and his wonderful eateries, cookery school and shops,  drop a crabline in the harbour or walk along the coastal path to Padstow beach for a swim.

In South East Cornwall,  one of our favourite away days is the remote beach at Lantic bay where the waves are gentle, the calm sea makes for great swimming and boats bob in the distance.  Again, this beach is accessed from a path with around a 20 minute walk from the car parks,  take a bbq or picnic and enjoy a restful day,  it is also dog friendly.
