True Dartmoor Wilderness
Borough Farm has the most glorious views to the East towards Dartmoor National Park. It is only a short drive to our nearest touching point - the iconic Brentor Church.
A visit to the tiniest of buildings perched on a granite tor is a must for guests staying at Borough Farm, from the top you can look west towards the farm and in the summer months can pick out our great links yurt sitting in the field. The church is always open and from its environs, offers 360 degree views which put everything into perspective.
Another favourite are the walks around Lydford village, not just the fabulous National Trust gorge walks but also Lyford woods where young walkers and four legged friends can run free along the traffic free lanes winding through the woodland. Our absolute favourite walk, at Widgery Cross, or Brat Tor as defined on the OS map, is to be found at the end of a stony lane at the far end of the village, there is a short circular walk from the car park which is obvious to the first time Dartmoor walker. Or those keen on a longer romp can enjoy a larger loop out towards bleak house and Great and Little Links Tor.
Other favourites include Wistmans Wood, Tavy Cleave, Belliver Woods, Meldon reservoir and the water falls at Peter Tavy. We have an abundance of guide books for these and other Dartmoor walks.
We have great local knowledge of the moors, one of the last truly wild spaces in England, and can direct our guests to wild swimming spots, high tors and gentle valleys to suit interests.
In addition to walking with or without your four legged furry friend, there is horse riding available at Cholwell stables, Mary Tavy, riders for all levels are taken straight out on the open moorland for a magical experience.
There are numerous cycling trails both across the moor and along purpose made paths, including the Granite way which runs from Okehampton train station to Lydford. There are some great tracks for off road bikes around Princetown, in the centre of the moor.
Wild swimming is wonderful on Dartmoor and nothing says relax more than swimming in a burbling Dartmoor stream, pool or leat. There are numerous options if that is what you seek.
For those that like a challenge, Dartmoor is home to Letter Boxing, an activity whereby you search out ‘letter boxes’ placed strategically, once found, there is a stamp and pad for you to place your mark in your book and a 100 club for those that have found the target centenary number.
Photographers will adore the early morning and golden hour light, particularly if it includes a Dartmoor Sheep or Pony in the shot
For those with an interest in history, Dartmoor is home to numerous stone circles and stone rows, there are some fabulous examples at Merrivale and on the moors around Chagford.
So pack a back pack, a picnic - perhaps a pasty from the local farm shops, and set off on a day filled with adventure and wild living.
